A BIG WIN
A
woman who lives near a letterbox wrote to
a newspaper describing the antics of those
she watches posting their football coupons.
One man walks three times around the pillar-box
before popping in his coupon. A woman kisses
the envelope three times before parting with
it. While yet another man removes his cap
and his lips are seen to be moving as if in
prayer. All these things are done in an effort
to obtain this one object.
If you are one of those hoping for a big
win and who isn't? A word of
caution. One must be careful that in getting
a big win it isn't done at a big loss. Let
me explain.
The Bible warns against this kind of "win"
when it says, "For what shall it profit
a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and
lose his own soul?"(1)
Just suppose for a moment that your win was
not reckoned in thousands but that you had
won all the resources, the pleasures, the
powers of the world. Would it really be a
win if after all it meant the loss of your
soul for all eternity?
As the poet put it:
'To lose one's wealth is much
To lose one's health is more,
To lose one's soul is such a loss
As nothing can restore.'
If you want an outright win with no regrets,
there is only one way to get it. That is by
surrendering instead of grasping. The great
cry in the world today is, "Me first!"
But the way to true happiness is not Me first,
but God first. God alone gives the best, and
when you have put yourself in His hands by
accepting His Son, Jesus Christ, as your Saviour,
you gain "forgiveness of sins,"(2)
"peace with God,"(3) and "joy
unceasing."(4)
To receive this prize you need to come to
God. Here is a simple prayer by which you
may come:
"O God, l admit I have sinned. I am
willing to turn from my sin. I take Jesus
Christ to be my personal Saviour and Lord.
Amen."
